Large ships now burn realistic fuel
The Container Ship and the Bulk Freighter burned about twice what real vessels of their size do. Their consumption is now calibrated to real ships, so long-haul sea quotes carry half the fuel they did and a full sailing costs what a real crossing costs.
Every hull's fuel burn was checked against a real vessel of the same deadweight at the same service speed. The aircraft were already right: the light, medium and heavy freighters burn what an ATR 72, a 737 and a 777 freighter burn. The coaster and the feeder vessel were within a quarter of their real counterparts and are unchanged.
- Container Ship: 180 to 90 litres per kilometre, the burn of a Panamax container ship at 20 knots. - Bulk Freighter: 220 to 72 litres per kilometre, the burn of a post-Panamax bulk carrier at 16 knots. - Sea quotes fall by the fuel those hulls no longer burn, and a municipal tank sized from its departures orders less for them.
